Kilometer cost calculator

What does one kilometer by car really cost?

Calculate your total costs per kilometer and consumption plus wear. Enter a distance to see what a single or return trip costs — with your own inputs and without signing in.

Your inputs

The starting values are a petrol-car example, not current market prices or measured values. Replace them with your own costs.

Energy unit

Fixed costs include insurance, tax and regular parking. The maintenance budget includes repairs, tires and wear. When changing the energy unit, check consumption and price.

What will this trip cost?

For a return trip, the entered distance is counted twice.

Use your own car’s data

Add your car and track receipts, costs and mileage. Your own data makes the calculation more precise than example values.

How the calculation works

Total costs per kilometer

Consumption × energy price ÷ 100 + (annual fixed costs + maintenance budget + depreciation) ÷ annual kilometers.

Fixed costs such as insurance and tax are distributed over your annual mileage. A lower annual mileage therefore increases their share per kilometer.

Consumption + wear per kilometer

Consumption × energy price ÷ 100 + annual maintenance and repair budget ÷ annual kilometers.

The trip amount is the selected kilometer rate multiplied by the total distance. Only the final trip amount is rounded to cents.

Example: 50 km with a petrol car

At 6.5 l/100 km and €1.80/l, consumption costs €0.117/km. With 12,000 km per year, €1,200 fixed costs, €600 maintenance and repairs and €1,200 depreciation per year, total costs are €0.367/km. A 50 km trip therefore has a total cost share of €18.35, or €36.70 with the return trip. Consumption plus wear is €8.35, or €16.70 with the return trip.

All amounts are illustrative assumptions. Parking charges and tolls for the specific trip are additional.

Frequently asked questions

What does one kilometer by car cost?

It depends on your consumption, energy price, annual mileage and other car costs. With the example on this page, total costs are €0.367 per km and consumption plus wear is €0.167 per km. These are example calculations, not a general market rate.

Why show two kilometer prices?

Total costs allocate fixed costs and depreciation to each kilometer. Consumption plus wear estimates the usage-related share of an additional trip. The two amounts are alternatives for different questions and should not be added together.

How is a return trip calculated?

Enter the one-way distance and select Return trip. The calculator doubles the entered distance. Actual road distances in the two directions may differ.

Can I calculate costs for an electric car?

Yes. Select electricity and enter consumption in kWh per 100 km and your effective price per kWh. Include charging losses in your consumption if you know them.

How do I get a more accurate result for my own car?

Add your car and record costs, receipts and mileage. The personal calculator uses a matching historical period when available and otherwise shows a clearly labeled planned estimate.
